Formats often used include Syslog, Windows Event Logs, JSON, and vendor-specific formats; standardization enables cross-system correlation.

Log management solutions range from on-premises servers to cloud-based services, and may be standalone or integrated with SIEM capabilities. A typical architecture uses log collectors, a central storage or index, and a search/analytics layer, sometimes with alerting and visualization components. Time synchronization and log integrity are important considerations.

Common use cases include troubleshooting incidents, capacity planning, security monitoring, audit trails, and regulatory reporting for frameworks such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, and GDPR.

Key best practices include centralized logging, consistent log formats, secure transport (encryption in transit and at rest), access controls, data retention with defined lifecycles, and proper data minimization. Regular validation of log coverage, monitoring of ingestion pipelines, and cost-aware storage strategies are also recommended.
