Livsmedelsmärkning refers to the information provided on food packaging to inform consumers about the product. This information is crucial for making informed purchasing decisions and ensuring food safety. In the European Union, and consequently in Sweden, the regulations governing food labeling are harmonized.

Key information typically found on food labels includes the product name, net quantity, ingredients list, allergens, durability indication (best before date or use by date), storage instructions, manufacturer or packer details, and country of origin. The ingredients list is presented in descending order by weight. Allergens are highlighted, often in bold text, to make them easily identifiable.

Nutritional information is also a significant component of food labeling, providing details about energy content, fat, saturated fatty acids, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, and salt per 100 grams or 100 milliliters, and often per serving. This allows consumers to compare the nutritional value of different products.

In addition to mandatory information, voluntary labeling may include claims about health benefits, origin, or specific production methods. These claims must be substantiated and not misleading. The aim of comprehensive food labeling is to protect consumer health, prevent fraud, and facilitate fair competition among food businesses. Enforcement of these regulations is typically carried out by relevant authorities, such as the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket).
