Liukukaliipperit

Liukukaliipperit, often translated as floating or sliding calipers, are a type of brake caliper used in automotive braking systems. They are characterized by a caliper body that is not fixed to the wheel hub but is instead able to slide horizontally. This sliding action is crucial to their function.

In a liukukaliipperi system, there is typically one or two pistons on one side of the brake disc. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is applied, forcing these pistons inward. This action pushes the brake pad against the rotor. Because the caliper body can slide, it then pulls the opposite brake pad into contact with the other side of the rotor. This clamping action, created by the caliper body sliding, ensures that both pads engage the rotor evenly.

This design offers several advantages, including a simpler and more cost-effective manufacturing process compared to fixed calipers. They are also generally lighter. However, the sliding mechanism, often facilitated by pins or guide bolts, can be susceptible to corrosion and wear over time, potentially leading to reduced braking performance or sticking. Regular maintenance and lubrication of the sliding components are therefore important for optimal operation of liukukaliipperit. They are a common type of caliper found on many vehicles, particularly on the rear axles of some cars and on many motorcycles.
