Litopterns
Litopterna is an extinct order of South American ungulate mammals. These animals were native to South America for millions of years and diversified into a wide range of forms, from small, deer-like creatures to large, llama-like herbivores. The group is characterized by a number of skeletal features, including a relatively unspecialized astragalus (ankle bone) and a tendency towards a reduction in the number of toes.
The earliest litopterns appeared in the Paleocene epoch, shortly after the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs.
