Liraine

Liraine is a coastal city-state on the southern coast of the continent of Nyrith. Founded as a trading outpost, it evolved into a semi-democratic mercantile republic. The population is about 60,000, and residents include merchants, sailors, artisans, and laborers.

Its harbor is sheltered by limestone headlands, and the surrounding terrain includes tidal flats and orchards. The economy centers on shipbuilding, glassmaking, and long-distance trade. Major exports include blown glass, timber, wine, and spices; imports focus on grain, metals, and luxury goods.

Liraine's history traces to guild-founded outposts in the early centuries of the Second Era. It gained de facto independence after the Veridian Pact, and in law it is governed by the Charter of Liraine. The Council of Twelve, elected by guilds and boroughs, chooses a Consul. The legal system emphasizes mercantile law and navigational rights, with limited executive powers for the Consul.

Culturally, Liraine is known for Harbor Night, a festival of music and lanterns. The Glass House Academy trains glassblowers and navigators. Liric is the majority language, and the city hosts temples to sea deities within its walls. Education and apprenticeship traditions remain strong, particularly in crafts connected to the harbor economy.

Today, Liraine participates in regional trade leagues while maintaining an autonomous legal framework. A small naval force guards its approaches, and the city remains a popular center for artisans and merchants.
