Lipofiilsus

Lipofiilsus is a term used in some theoretical discussions to denote a class of intracellular pigment-like granules that accumulate in aging cells, particularly in lipid-rich organelles, and are described as distinct from but analogous to lipofuscin. It is not universally adopted in the scientific literature and may appear in speculative reviews or discussions of aging biomarkers.

These granules are reported to be autofluorescent, accumulate within lysosome-like compartments, and appear in various post-mitotic tissues including neurons and cardiomyocytes in certain model systems. Composition is thought to include polymerized lipid-protein complexes derived from partially degraded cellular components, though exact chemical makeup is not well defined.

The proposed biogenesis involves imperfect lysosomal degradation of damaged lipids and proteins, lipid peroxidation, and impaired autophagic flux, leading to the cross-linked material that resists breakdown. Environmental stressors such as oxidative stress, aging, and metabolic disturbances are cited as contributing factors.

Detection relies on autofluorescence imaging, with emission detected in ranges overlapping those of lipofuscin; researchers may use colocalization with lysosomal markers and spectral analysis to distinguish lipofiilsus from related pigments. However, methodological variations and overlapping properties with established pigments complicate attribution.

In the current state, lipofiilsus remains a topic of limited and contested use; it is not universally recognized as a distinct cellular entity, and some researchers advocate for clearer definitions or to reserve the term for specific contexts or model systems. More experimental work is needed to establish consistent criteria for identification, biogenesis, and functional impact.
