Lineaaristamisen

Lineaaristamisen, often translated as linearisation, is a process in mathematics and engineering where a nonlinear system or function is approximated by a linear one. This simplification is extremely useful because linear systems are much easier to analyze, solve, and control than their nonlinear counterparts.

The core idea behind linearisation is to focus on the behavior of the system around a specific operating point. For a function f(x), if we are interested in its behavior near a point x0, we can use the Taylor expansion of f(x) around x0. The first-order Taylor expansion is f(x) ≈ f(x0) + f'(x0)(x - x0). If we consider the deviation from the operating point (x - x0) as a new variable, say Δx, and the change in the function as Δf = f(x) - f(x0), then the linearised relationship becomes Δf ≈ f'(x0)Δx. Here, f'(x0) is the derivative of f at x0, acting as a constant of proportionality.

In systems with multiple variables, linearisation involves taking partial derivatives. For a system described by differential equations, linearisation is commonly applied to find the system's response to small perturbations around an equilibrium point. This allows for the analysis of stability and the design of controllers using well-established linear control theory techniques.

While linearisation provides a powerful tool for analysis, it's important to remember that it is an approximation. The accuracy of the linearised model depends on how closely the system's behavior adheres to linearity in the region of interest. For larger deviations from the operating point, the linearised model may become inaccurate, and the full nonlinear system must be considered.
