Liitetiedot

Liitetiedot is the Finnish term for supplementary information attached to a primary document, dataset, or record. They provide additional context, evidence, or details that do not fit into the main body of the item. In administrative, legal, and information-management settings, liitetiedot are separate elements linked to the main item rather than embedded within it.

In digital systems, liitetiedot consist of attachments such as documents, images, spreadsheets, or web links. Each attachment is described by metadata—file name, mime type, size, creation date, and an optional description—and stored either as a file in a storage system or as a data object in a database. A single item may have zero or more attachments.

Usage and governance: attachments can be mandatory or optional. They support verification, evidentiary requirements, or supplementary explanations. Proper handling includes access control, versioning, and retention policies, especially when attachments contain sensitive or personal information. Consistency between the main record and its attachments is typically ensured through identifiers or relational links.

Examples: in a government form, liitetiedot may include scanned receipts or certificates; in a research project, it could be supplementary data files or methodological notes; in an HR system, it could be resumes or certifications attached to an applicant profile.
