Liimaaineita, commonly known as adhesives, are substances used to bond materials together. They work through surface attraction, either by wetting the surfaces of the materials to be joined and then hardening, or by forming a chemical bond. Adhesives can be found in many forms, including liquids, pastes, tapes, and films. The choice of adhesive depends on the materials being joined, the intended application, and the environmental conditions.

There are numerous types of adhesives, broadly categorized by their curing mechanisms or chemical composition. Mechanical fasteners, such as nails and screws, create a physical connection. In contrast, adhesives create a bond through intermolecular forces. Some common types include epoxy resins, which are strong and durable and cure through a chemical reaction between a resin and a hardener. Cyanoacrylates, often called super glues, are fast-acting adhesives that form strong bonds on a variety of surfaces. Water-based adhesives, like PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glue, are common for woodworking and paper crafts, relying on the evaporation of water to set. Solvent-based adhesives use solvents to dissolve the adhesive, which then bonds the surfaces as the solvent evaporates. Pressure-sensitive adhesives, found in tapes and labels, form a bond simply upon application of pressure.

Adhesives are used in a vast array of industries, from construction and automotive manufacturing to electronics and packaging. They offer advantages such as distributing stress evenly across a joint, creating a seal, and joining dissimilar materials. However, their performance can be affected by temperature, humidity, and chemical exposure. Proper surface preparation is crucial for achieving a strong and lasting adhesive bond.
