Liikennöintioptio
Liikennöintioptio refers to a specific type of financial derivative, primarily used in the shipping industry. It is a contract that grants the holder the right, but not the obligation, to charter a vessel at a predetermined rate for a specified period. This option is typically exercised when the market charter rate for a vessel becomes higher than the rate agreed upon in the option contract, making it profitable for the holder to exercise their right to charter at the lower, pre-agreed rate. Conversely, if the market rate falls below the option rate, the holder can choose not to exercise the option, limiting their potential losses to the premium paid for the option.
These instruments are often used by charterers and shipowners to manage price volatility in the freight market.
