Liikaherkkyys, a Finnish term, translates to hypersensitivity or oversensitivity in English. It describes a state where an individual experiences heightened responses to stimuli that are typically considered normal or even mild by others. This can manifest in various ways, affecting sensory perception, emotional regulation, and social interactions.

Sensory hypersensitivity is a common characteristic, meaning individuals may be easily overwhelmed by sights, sounds, smells, tastes, or textures. For instance, bright lights, loud noises, strong perfumes, or certain fabrics can cause discomfort or distress. This can lead to avoidance behaviors, where individuals try to minimize exposure to overwhelming stimuli.

Emotional hypersensitivity involves a tendency to experience emotions more intensely and for longer durations.
