Liigsöömishoogu

Liigsöömishoogu, a Finnish term, translates to binge eating. It refers to episodes of consuming a significantly larger amount of food than normal in a discrete period of time, accompanied by a sense of lack of control during the eating episode. This behavior is often associated with eating much more rapidly than usual, eating until feeling uncomfortably full, eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry, and eating alone due to feeling embarrassed by the amount of food consumed. Following the binge, individuals often experience feelings of disgust, depression, or guilt.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is a recognized mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating. Unlike bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder does not involve regular compensatory behaviors such as purging, excessive exercise, or fasting. The frequency and severity of binge eating episodes are key diagnostic criteria. While occasional overeating can be a normal response to stress or social situations, binge eating disorder involves a pattern of behavior that causes significant distress and impairment in a person's life. Causes can be complex and may involve a combination of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors. Treatment often involves psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and sometimes medication.
