Lihasvähäkkyyteen, also known as cachexia, is a complex metabolic syndrome characterized by involuntary weight loss, muscle wasting, and loss of appetite. It is not a disease in itself but rather a symptom associated with various underlying medical conditions. These conditions can include advanced cancers, chronic infections like HIV/AIDS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, kidney disease, and autoimmune disorders.

The exact mechanisms behind cachexia are not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of factors, including inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and altered metabolism. The body's inflammatory response can lead to increased energy expenditure and breakdown of muscle tissue. Appetite loss further contributes to inadequate nutrient intake, exacerbating the weight loss.

Symptoms of cachexia typically include significant and unintentional weight loss, loss of muscle mass, fatigue, weakness, and reduced physical function. Individuals may also experience a decreased appetite, although sometimes appetite can remain normal or even increase. The progression of cachexia can significantly impact a person's quality of life, leading to impaired mobility, increased susceptibility to infections, and ultimately, a poorer prognosis.

Diagnosis of cachexia is usually based on clinical assessment, including measuring weight loss and evaluating muscle mass. There is no single cure for cachexia, and treatment focuses on addressing the underlying condition and managing symptoms. Nutritional support, such as dietary counseling and supplements, is a cornerstone of management. Pharmacological interventions are also being researched to combat muscle wasting and inflammation.
