Lihastõmblused

Lihastõmblused, known in English as muscle twitches or fasciculations, are involuntary, localized contractions of muscle fibers. These brief, often subtle movements can occur in any skeletal muscle in the body and are usually not a cause for concern. They are often described as a flickering or quivering sensation under the skin.

The exact cause of most benign muscle twitches is not fully understood, but they are commonly associated with factors such as fatigue, stress, caffeine intake, dehydration, and certain electrolyte imbalances like low potassium or magnesium. Sometimes, they can be a side effect of certain medications. These types of twitches are typically temporary and resolve on their own once the underlying cause is addressed.

While most fasciculations are harmless, persistent or widespread twitches, especially when accompanied by muscle weakness, atrophy, or cramping, can sometimes indicate an underlying neurological condition. Conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy, or peripheral nerve damage can manifest with more significant muscle twitches. A medical professional should be consulted if twitches are severe, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms to rule out any serious medical issues. Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, a review of medical history, and potentially further testing like electromyography (EMG) or nerve conduction studies.
