These mechanisms are fundamental to ensuring security, privacy, and the integrity of information.

At their core, access mechanisms involve authentication and authorization. Authentication is the process of verifying the identity of a user or entity attempting to gain access. This can be achieved through various means, such as passwords, biometric data (fingerprints, facial recognition), security tokens, or multi-factor authentication (MFA) which combines multiple methods for enhanced security. Once an identity is confirmed, authorization determines what actions that authenticated entity is permitted to perform.
