Light up refers to the act of making something emit light or become illuminated. In everyday use, the standard phrasing is the two-word verb phrase “to light up,” and the hyphenated “light-up” is common when used as an adjective or noun (as in a light-up toy or a light-up sign). The single-word form “lightup” is rare in general prose and is more often encountered as a brand name or stylized product designation.

In technology and consumer electronics, light-up devices rely on light sources such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), incandescent bulbs, or electroluminescent elements. They require a power source and some form of control circuitry, which may range from a simple switch to a microcontroller that sequences lighting patterns. Safety and energy considerations drive design choices, favoring low-voltage, low-heat solutions and compliant materials, especially for wearable or children-oriented products.
