Lieväetsaus, a Finnish term translating to "mild etching" or "light etching," refers to a controlled chemical process used to remove a thin layer of material from a surface. It is commonly employed in various industrial and laboratory settings to prepare surfaces for subsequent treatments, to achieve specific surface finishes, or to remove unwanted oxidation or contamination. The process involves immersing the material in a mild etchant solution, typically an acid or alkaline mixture, for a specific duration. The concentration and type of etchant, as well as the exposure time, are carefully controlled to achieve the desired depth of material removal without causing significant structural damage or excessive material loss.

In electronics manufacturing, lieväetsaus is often used to clean and prepare printed circuit boards (PCBs) before plating or soldering. It can also be utilized in the fabrication of semiconductor devices to selectively remove thin films or to define patterns on wafers. In metallurgy, it can be used for deburring small parts or for creating specific surface textures. The effectiveness of lieväetsaus relies on the chemical reactivity of the etchant with the target material, while also being relatively inert to the rest of the object. After the etching process, the material is thoroughly rinsed to remove any residual etchant and byproducts.
