Liberal-democratic is an adjective used to describe political systems, ideologies, or parties that combine liberal principles with democratic governance. In this sense, liberal-democratic arrangements aim to protect individual rights and civil liberties while organizing political power through elections and representative institutions.

Core features typically associated with liberal-democratic regimes include constitutionalism, a system of checks and balances, independent judiciary, and the rule of law. They emphasize free and fair elections, political pluralism, freedom of expression, association, and religion, and protection of minority rights. Economic aspects often accompany these frameworks, with support for competitive markets alongside social safeguards, though the precise mix can vary.

Historically, liberal-democratic thought emerges from the fusion of classical liberal emphasis on individual rights and government limited by law, with democratic ideals of popular sovereignty and accountability. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, many Western and allied nations adopted forms of liberal democracy, refining institutions such as constitutional courts, parliamentary or presidential systems, and multi-party competition. The term is also used in political science to categorize states or parties that explicitly foreground both liberal and democratic commitments, in contrast to illiberal or authoritarian models.

In contemporary discourse, liberal-democratic is often contrasted with other governance models, such as illiberal democracies, social democracies, or authoritarian regimes.
