Levyjarru

Levyjarru, often translated as disc brake, is a type of brake system that uses calipers to squeeze pads against a rotating disc (or rotor) to create friction and slow down or stop a vehicle. This system is widely used in automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, and many other applications requiring effective braking.

The core components of a levyjarru system include the rotor, which is typically mounted to the wheel hub and rotates with it, and the caliper, which houses the brake pads. When the brake pedal is pressed (or the brake lever is actuated), hydraulic fluid or a mechanical linkage applies pressure to the caliper. This pressure forces pistons within the caliper to push the brake pads inwards, clamping them onto the rotor. The resulting friction converts kinetic energy into heat, slowing the rotation of the rotor and thus the wheel.

Levyjarru systems offer several advantages over older drum brake designs. They generally provide superior stopping power, especially in wet conditions, due to the rotor being more exposed to air for cooling. They also tend to be more resistant to brake fade, which is the loss of braking effectiveness due to overheating. Maintenance can also be simpler, as pad replacement is often more straightforward. The design allows for better heat dissipation, contributing to consistent performance.
