Leukocyterich

Leukocyte-rich, often appearing as the term "leukocyte-rich" in medical contexts, refers to a sample or a preparation that contains a significantly higher than normal concentration of leukocytes. Leukocytes, commonly known as white blood cells, are a crucial component of the immune system, responsible for defending the body against infection and disease.

When a sample is described as leukocyte-rich, it implies an elevated number of these cells compared to a standard or baseline count. This elevation can occur under various circumstances. For instance, in a sample of blood, a high leukocyte count, or leukocytosis, can indicate the presence of an infection, inflammation, or other medical conditions. In the context of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, leukocyte-rich PRP (LR-PRP) is a specific type of PRP preparation that contains a higher proportion of white blood cells alongside platelets.

The presence of leukocytes in LR-PRP is thought to contribute to its therapeutic effects, as these cells can release growth factors and cytokines that promote tissue healing and regeneration. However, the exact role and benefit of high leukocyte content in PRP are still subjects of ongoing research and debate within the medical community. Different protocols for preparing PRP exist, leading to variations in leukocyte concentration and consequently, different types of PRP, such as leukocyte-poor PRP (LP-PRP). The term leukocyte-rich is therefore a descriptor of the cellular composition of a biological sample or therapeutic preparation.
