In practice, lessthanoptimal solutions arise when algorithms terminate early, when heuristics or metaheuristics are used, when data or model mis-specification limits performance, or when constraints are binding. It is also used to describe models that perform below their potential due to regularization, noise, or overfitting. In machine learning, a lessthanoptimal model might have subpar predictive accuracy compared to the best-known model for a task.
