Lessenhancing is a term used to describe practices, designs, or policies that intentionally limit or reduce augmentation, enhancement, or optimization across domains such as biotechnology, technology, and education. The concept is applied to situations where widespread or extreme enhancement could amplify inequalities, introduce safety risks, or undermine autonomy and well-being. Rather than advocating for the absence of improvement altogether, lessenhancing focuses on balancing potential gains with safeguards, accessibility, and long-term societal consequences.

In bioethics and medicine, lessenhancing may involve regulatory frameworks that cap the extent of genetic, pharmacological, or digital enhancements or require stringent risk assessments and equitable access. In technology and user experience, it can manifest as interface or product choices that minimize persuasive techniques, performance boosts, or feature creep, with an emphasis on reliability, privacy, and user autonomy.
