Lesionectie

Lesionectie is a medical term describing a surgical procedure to remove a lesion from tissue or an organ. The goal is to eliminate diseased or abnormal tissue, sometimes for diagnostic purposes and sometimes as definitive therapy. The term is used across several specialties, including dermatology, neurosurgery, and general surgery, and the exact technique depends on the lesion’s type, size, and location.

Common indications include removing benign skin lesions (such as moles or seborrheic keratoses) for cosmetic reasons or symptom relief; excising suspicious or malignant lesions with appropriate margins; and resecting certain brain or spinal lesions when they are epileptogenic, tumorous, or otherwise causing impairment. Lesions in internal organs may be removed to obtain tissue for diagnosis or to treat localized disease.

Techniques vary and may include complete excision with margins (excisional biopsy), en bloc resection, enucleation, curettage, or the use of energy devices (e.g., laser, radiofrequency) in selected settings. The choice depends on the lesion’s pathology, location, and the need to preserve surrounding structures. Specimens are sent for histopathological analysis.

Preoperative assessment typically involves imaging and, when indicated, biopsy to characterize the lesion. Intraoperative imaging and neuronavigation may be used for deeper or delicate sites. Postoperative care includes wound management, pathology review, and follow-up to monitor for complications or recurrence. The prognosis and additional therapy depend on the underlying pathology and completeness of resection.

Risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, loss of function, and, when malignant tissue is involved, need for further treatment. Alternatives range from observation to less invasive techniques or conservative management when removal is not warranted.

Terminology for lesion removal varies by specialty; "lesionectie" is sometimes used as a general label, while other fields prefer terms such as excision, resection, or lesionectomy with more specific scope.
