Lekkasjetesting

Lekkasjetesting is a set of procedures used to assess the integrity of seals, joints, and containment boundaries by employing a controlled jet of test fluid—usually a gas such as air or an inert gas, or a liquid. The approach aims to reveal leaks by generating disturbances in the flow field or by causing a detectable effluent at the surface or a downstream sensor. It is applied in industries where containment is critical, including aerospace, automotive, vacuum systems, pressure vessels, piping networks, and medical devices.

Techniques vary but common elements include directing a calibrated jet at potential leakage paths and using secondary indicators such as tracer gases, bubble visualization, or pressure and flow measurements to indicate leakage. In practice, lekkasjetesting may be combined with established methods such as pressure decay, vacuum decay, helium or hydrogen mass spectrometry, dye penetrant, or visual inspection to quantify leak rates. Jet-based testing is often used as a rapid screening or targeted verification when other methods are impractical.

Standards and protocols are industry-specific and may reference general leak-testing guidelines from national or international bodies. Effectiveness depends on jet parameters, system geometry, fluids, and safety considerations. Limitations include limited sensitivity for very small leaks, potential for false indicators in complex assemblies, and the need for proper containment and handling of the test medium.
