Legionellarisico

Legionellarisico refers to the potential for Legionella bacteria to inhabit and proliferate in water systems and related environments, creating a risk of human exposure and disease. The term is used in risk assessments for buildings, hospitals, hotels, industrial facilities, and public settings to describe factors that influence colonization, growth, and transmission.

Legionella bacteria occur naturally in freshwater but become hazardous when they colonize artificial systems such as hot-water tanks, cooling towers, humidification devices, decorative fountains, and spa pools. Inhalation of tiny aerosolized water droplets containing Legionella can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe pneumonia, or Pontiac fever, a milder illness. Person-to-person transmission is not typical.

Risk factors include complex or poorly maintained water systems, temperatures that fall within the bacteria’s growth range (roughly 20–45°C, with higher risk around 25–40°C), stagnation, biofilms and sediment, and the presence of amoebae that harbor the bacteria. Older adults, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems or chronic lung disease are at higher risk of disease.

Assessment typically involves identifying potential sources, evaluating water system design and operation, and determining the likelihood of exposure. Health authorities and professional bodies recommend routine water management plans, appropriate testing when indicated, and corrective actions if contamination is detected.

Prevention and control measures include maintaining hot water temperatures, preventing stagnation, regular cleaning and disinfection of systems, proper monitoring, and engineering controls as part of a comprehensive water management plan. While not all exposures lead to illness, reducing Legionellarisico relies on proactive design, operation, and surveillance to protect occupants.
