Ledningsflöde

Ledningsflöde, often translated as conduction flow or simply conductivity, refers to the movement of charge carriers within a material when an electric field is applied. In solids, these charge carriers are typically electrons, while in electrolytes, they are ions. The ease with which this flow occurs is a fundamental property of the material and is quantified by its electrical conductivity.

Materials with high ledningsflöde are known as conductors. These substances, such as metals, readily allow charge to move through them. Conversely, materials with low ledningsflöde are called insulators. They resist the flow of charge, making them useful for preventing electrical current. Semiconductors exhibit an intermediate level of ledningsflöde, which can be manipulated by external factors like temperature or the addition of impurities, forming the basis of modern electronic devices.

The concept of ledningsflöde is intimately linked to Ohm's law, which describes the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance. Conductivity is the reciprocal of resistivity, a measure of how strongly a material opposes the flow of electric current. Therefore, a high conductivity implies low resistivity and vice versa.
