Lausetelts

The lausetelts, also known as the common bedbug (*Cimex lectularius*), is a small, flat, oval-shaped insect that feeds exclusively on the blood of humans and animals. These pests are a global problem, found in various environments worldwide, including homes, hotels, hospitals, and public transportation. Despite their name, they are not closely related to true bugs (Heteroptera) but belong to the order Hemiptera, suborder Cimicomorpha.

Lausetelts are typically reddish-brown in color, measuring about 4 to 5 millimeters in length when fully grown. They are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night and hide in cracks and crevices during the day. Their presence is often detected through bite marks on exposed skin, small bloodstains on bedding, or the sighting of shed skins, eggs, or fecal spots. Bites from lausetelts are usually painless at first but can cause itching, swelling, and allergic reactions in some individuals.

Infestations occur when lausetelts hitchhike on luggage, clothing, or furniture. They thrive in warm, humid environments and can reproduce rapidly, with females laying up to five eggs per day. Controlling an infestation requires thorough cleaning, heat treatment, and often professional pest control measures. Prevention involves inspecting accommodations before staying, using protective covers on mattresses, and regularly checking luggage after travel.

While lausetelts are not known to transmit diseases to humans, their bites can lead to psychological distress and economic losses due to the cost of treatment and pest control. Public awareness and proper hygiene practices remain essential in minimizing their spread and impact.
