Lattenwerk

Lattenwerk is a term used in architecture and decorative arts to denote a screen or partition made from slender elements called slats (latten). The slats are arranged in a regular pattern—typically vertically, horizontally, or diagonally—to create a lattice-like surface that lets light and air pass while providing visual privacy or shading. Lattenwerk can be a freestanding panel, a wall insert, or integrated into a facade, ceiling, or furniture.

Materials and construction: slats are most commonly made of wood, such as oak, maple, or pine, but metal lattenwerk in iron, brass, or steel is also common, especially in industrial or contemporary contexts. The slats may be evenly spaced or staggered, and the panel may be framed with a solid border or integrated into the surrounding wall. Subtypes include vertical lath screens, horizontal lath screens, and diagonal lattices.

Function and use: lattenwerk is primarily decorative and functional—filtering light, improving ventilation, dividing spaces, and contributing texture or rhythm to interiors or exteriors. In historical contexts, lattenwerk appeared in church interiors as screens or partitions, and in timber-framed façades as ornamental elements. In modern architecture and furniture, lattenwerk is used for privacy screens, room dividers, and acoustic panels, often with metal finishes or powder-coated surfaces for durability.
