The term originates from the Latin word *later*, meaning brick, due to its historical use in construction materials. Lateritic soils form in regions with high temperatures and heavy rainfall, typically within the tropics, where intense chemical weathering breaks down parent rock into fine particles.

The formation process involves prolonged exposure to moisture and heat, leading to the leaching of silica and other soluble minerals, while iron and aluminum oxides remain. This results in a dense, clay-rich layer known as the lateritic horizon, often found beneath a thin organic layer. The soil’s high iron content gives it a distinctive reddish hue, though variations in color can occur depending on local geology and climate conditions.

Lateritic soils are commonly found in parts of Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and Australia. They are typically poor in nutrients and organic matter due to extensive leaching, which can limit their agricultural productivity. However, they are well-drained and stable, making them suitable for certain crops like cassava, coconut, and rubber. In some regions, laterite is mined and processed for use in construction, such as bricks or road materials, due to its durability.

The term *lateriittinen* (Finnish for lateritic) is occasionally used in Finnish geology and soil science to describe soils with laterite-like properties, particularly in tropical or subtropical environments. These soils require careful land management, including fertilization and erosion control, to support sustainable farming practices.
