These methods are characterized by their convenience and high effectiveness, as they do not require daily attention from the user. The primary goal of long-term reversible contraception is to provide reliable protection against unintended pregnancy without the need for constant user compliance, making them a popular choice for individuals and couples seeking extended periods of fertility control.

Common examples of long-term reversible contraceptive methods include hormonal implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs). Hormonal implants are small, flexible rods inserted under the skin of the upper arm, releasing progestin to prevent ovulation for up to three years. Intrauterine devices are T-shaped devices placed in the uterus; they can be either hormonal, releasing progestin for three to eight years depending on the type, or copper, which releases ions that are toxic to sperm and eggs and can last for up to ten years.
