Labralesletsels

Labralesletsels is a term used to refer to injuries of the labrum, the ring of fibrocartilage that helps stabilize ball-and-socket joints such as the shoulder (glenoid labrum) and hip (acetabular labrum). The term is commonly used in Dutch-language clinical contexts and corresponds to English terms like labral lesion or labral tear.

Types of labralesletsels vary by location and mechanism. In the shoulder, common patterns include superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears and Bankart lesions associated with shoulder dislocation. In the hip, labral tears are often related to femoroacetabular impingement or degenerative changes.

Typical symptoms are joint pain, mechanical phenomena such as clicking or catching, reduced range of motion, and in some cases a sense of instability. Presentation may be acute after trauma or develop gradually due to repetitive microtrauma or degeneration.

Diagnosis combines clinical history and physical examination with imaging. Plain radiographs assess bony anatomy, while magnetic resonance imaging—often with arthrographic contrast—provides the best visualization of labral pathology. Diagnostic injection can help localize pain.

Management ranges from conservative measures—activity modification, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medication, and intra-articular injections—to surgical interventions. Arthroscopic repair, debridement, or reconstruction may be indicated depending on lesion type, patient symptoms, and associated joint pathology. Outcomes are influenced by lesion chronicity, cartilage health, and comorbid conditions.
