LUNbased

LUNbased is a term used in computer storage to describe a configuration where storage is managed and accessed using Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs). A LUN is a unique identifier assigned to a logical disk or storage volume that is presented to a host computer. These LUNs are typically part of a larger storage array, such as a Storage Area Network (SAN) or Network Attached Storage (NAS) system.

In a LUNbased storage environment, the host server does not directly interact with the physical disks. Instead, the storage controller on the SAN or NAS abstracts the physical hardware and presents logical volumes (LUNs) to the servers. The server then sees these LUNs as if they were local hard drives, allowing it to format them with a file system and use them for data storage. This approach offers several advantages, including centralized management, improved utilization of storage resources, and the ability to easily provision and deprovision storage without physical intervention.

LUNbased storage is a fundamental concept in enterprise data centers and cloud computing environments. It allows for flexible and scalable storage solutions that can be dynamically allocated to various servers and applications as needed. The LUN itself is a logical construct, meaning it doesn't necessarily map directly to a single physical disk. Instead, the storage system manages the underlying physical media to create and manage these logical units.
