LTOformatok refers to the various file formats and data structures used with Linear Tape-Open (LTO) tape storage technology. LTO is a magnetic tape data storage technology developed in a collaboration between HP, IBM, and Seagate. The technology is designed for high-capacity, high-performance magnetic tape storage that is also cost-effective and secure.

The primary format associated with LTO is the LTFS (Linear Tape File System). LTFS is a file system that allows tape cartridges to be used like a hard drive or USB drive. It presents the tape as a standard file system, enabling drag-and-drop functionality and easy access to files without requiring special software. This makes it much simpler to manage and access data stored on LTO tapes compared to traditional tape backup software. LTFS stores metadata in a separate XML file on the tape, allowing the operating system to see a directory structure.

Beyond LTFS, LTO technology also supports other data formats, particularly for backup and archiving applications. These often involve proprietary or industry-standard compression and encryption algorithms. For example, data can be written to LTO tapes using backup software that employs formats like TAR or custom backup formats, often with data compression to maximize storage utilization. Encryption, such as AES-256, is also a common feature integrated at the drive level or through software, ensuring data security. The specific format used can depend on the LTO generation, the hardware vendor, and the software employed for data management.
