Tape

Tape is a flexible strip of material coated with an adhesive that allows it to adhere to surfaces. Most everyday tapes are pressure-sensitive adhesives that bond with light pressure at room temperature, though some tapes are water-activated (mucilage) or rely on heat, solvent, or mechanical adhesion. Tapes are used to join or seal objects, to insulate, or to mark, wrap, or repair.

Tapes consist of a backing material such as paper, polyethylene or polypropylene film, vinyl, cloth, or metal foil, coated on one or both sides with an adhesive. Common adhesives include rubber-based, acrylic, and silicone formulations, chosen for tack, strength, and temperature resistance. Some tapes are reinforced with fibers; others are double-sided or coated with silicone release liners.

Common types and uses: Masking tape and painter’s tape are paper-backed and easily removable, used in painting and crafts. Packing or shipping tape is a clear or tan film backed tape used to seal boxes. Duct tape is a cloth-backed, waterproof tape known for rugged bonding. Electrical tape is insulating vinyl used in wiring. Medical or surgical tapes secure dressings on skin. Double-sided tapes provide bonding without visible attachments. Specialty tapes include magnetic tape for data storage, metal foil tapes for shielding or HVAC, and high-temperature or aerospace tapes.

History and scope: Adhesive tapes were developed in the 20th century. Masking tape dates to the 1920s, duct tape emerged during World War II, and clear packaging tape followed in the mid-20th century. Magnetic tape played a pivotal role in audio and video recording from the 1950s onward, while modern tapes continue to serve roles in packaging, electronics, construction, medicine, and industry.
