LEO constellations refer to networks of satellites deployed in low Earth orbit, typically at altitudes ranging from 200 to 2,000 kilometers. The primary objective of these constellations is to deliver global communication services, including broadband internet, voice and data transmission, and other connectivity solutions. By positioning satellites relatively close to the Earth, LEO constellations can provide lower latency and higher data throughput compared to traditional geostationary satellites.

The modern era of LEO constellations began in earnest with the launch of SpaceX’s Starlink project in 2019, which deployed thousands of small satellites to offer high-speed internet to underserved regions worldwide. Other significant initiatives include OneWeb, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and Telesat’s LEO program. These projects collectively aim to create robust, low-latency broadband networks that can interoperate globally. The small, lightweight design of LEO satellites facilitates rapid deployment and mass production, often utilizing modular payloads and standardized launch vehicles.

However, LEO constellations also raise challenges. Orbital debris management becomes critical as large numbers of satellites increase collision risk. Coordination among international regulatory bodies, such as the International Telecommunication Union and national space agencies, is required to assign orbital slots, avoid interference, and enforce decommissioning protocols. Environmental considerations, including light pollution and the impact on astronomical observations, are also subjects of active research. Despite these concerns, LEO constellations are widely regarded as a transformative technology that promises to expand digital access to remote and underserved populations, drive new economic opportunities, and accelerate advancements in space-based infrastructure.
