Läkäksiä is a Finnish term that refers to the common cold. It is an infectious viral illness that affects the upper respiratory tract, primarily the nose and throat. Symptoms typically include a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, sneezing, and sometimes mild body aches or a low-grade fever.

The common cold is caused by numerous types of viruses, with rhinoviruses being the most frequent culprits. Transmission usually occurs through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, or through direct contact with contaminated surfaces.

While there is no cure for the common cold, treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms. Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications for pain relief and symptom management are commonly recommended. Läkäksiä is generally a self-limiting condition, meaning it resolves on its own within a week to ten days. Prevention measures include frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and not touching one's face. In Finland, as in many other cultures, läkäksiä is a widely recognized and experienced ailment.
