Közmszabályozó (media regulator) refers to the institutions and mechanisms responsible for overseeing and regulating media content, broadcasting, and communication services in Hungary. The primary goal of media regulation is to ensure fair competition, protect consumer rights, and uphold democratic principles by maintaining pluralism and freedom of expression within legal boundaries.

In Hungary, the primary regulatory body is the Nemzeti Média- és Hírközlési Hatóság (NMHH), established in 2010. The NMHH operates under the authority of the Hungarian government but functions independently in its regulatory tasks. Its responsibilities include licensing media operators, monitoring compliance with broadcasting laws, and resolving disputes related to media content. The authority also enforces advertising regulations and ensures that media outlets adhere to standards of fairness, accuracy, and diversity in their reporting.

Media regulation in Hungary is governed by the *Hírközlési Törvény* (Communications Act) and other related legislation, which outline the legal framework for broadcasting, cable television, and digital media. The NMHH is tasked with promoting media pluralism, protecting minors from harmful content, and preventing monopolistic practices that could undermine competition. Additionally, it oversees the implementation of the European Union’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) within Hungary.

Critics and supporters of media regulation often debate its effectiveness, with arguments ranging from concerns over government influence on independent oversight to the necessity of maintaining order in an increasingly complex media landscape.
