Kötélkészítés is the traditional craft of making ropes and cords, a practice that dates back thousands of years. The process involves twisting or braiding fibers to create strong, durable lengths of cable used in various applications, including maritime, industrial, agricultural, and everyday use.

The most common raw materials for kötélkészítés include natural fibers such as hemp, flax, sisal, jute, and cotton. These fibers are selected for their strength, flexibility, and resistance to wear. In modern times, synthetic fibers like nylon, polyester, and polypropylene have become popular, offering improved durability, elasticity, and resistance to environmental factors.

The production process begins with fiber preparation, where the fibers are cleaned, straightened, and sometimes spun into yarns. These yarns are then laid out and twisted in a specific direction to form strands called "strands" or "plies." multiple strands are subsequently twisted together in the opposite direction—a technique known as "laying up"—to form a finished rope. The tension and twisting are carefully controlled to ensure uniformity and strength.

Historically, kötélkészítés was a vital skill for ships, farmers, and builders, and has historically been performed by specialized craftsmen. Today, while industrial methods dominate commercial production, traditional rope-making remains a valued handicraft, often practiced as a hobby or for artisanal purposes.
