Körperoberflächenbereich, often abbreviated as BSA, refers to the total surface area of a person's body. It is a measure of a person's size and is used in various medical and scientific contexts. BSA is generally expressed in square meters (m²).

Calculating BSA is important because many physiological processes and drug dosages are related to the body's surface area rather than just its weight. For example, when determining the dose of certain chemotherapy drugs, the BSA is a crucial factor to ensure efficacy and minimize toxicity. Similarly, the rate of heat loss from the body is proportional to its surface area.

Several formulas exist to estimate BSA, with the Mosteller formula being one of the most commonly used. This formula requires only the height and weight of the individual. Other formulas include the Du Bois formula and the Gehan and George formula. While these formulas provide estimates, direct measurement of BSA is complex and not practical for routine use.

BSA varies significantly between individuals based on factors such as age, sex, and body composition. Children generally have a smaller BSA than adults, and men tend to have a larger BSA than women of the same height and weight due to differences in body composition. Understanding an individual's BSA allows for more personalized and accurate medical assessments and treatments.
