Kõvenemisviise

Kõvenemisviise refers to various methods used to increase the hardness and strength of materials, primarily metals. These processes involve altering the material's microstructure, often through heat treatment or mechanical deformation. One common technique is quenching, where a metal is rapidly cooled from a high temperature, typically in a liquid medium like water or oil. This rapid cooling traps the material in a harder, less stable crystalline structure. Tempering is often performed after quenching to reduce brittleness and improve toughness by reheating the metal to a specific temperature and holding it for a period before cooling.

Another category of hardening is work hardening, also known as strain hardening. This occurs when a metal is plastically deformed at temperatures below its recrystallization point. The deformation introduces dislocations within the crystal lattice, which impede further movement of these dislocations, thus increasing the material's resistance to deformation and increasing its hardness. Annealing, while often associated with softening, can also be part of a hardening process if followed by other treatments, as it can normalize the microstructure to prepare it for subsequent hardening steps. Surface hardening techniques, such as carburizing or nitriding, involve introducing elements like carbon or nitrogen into the surface layer of a metal to create a hard, wear-resistant case while maintaining a softer, tougher core.
