Kézifék

Kézifék is the Hungarian word for parking brake or handbrake. It is a mechanical device used to secure a vehicle when it is stationary, preventing it from rolling away due to gravity. The kézifék typically operates by applying force to the rear wheels, though in some vehicles it can also act on the driveshaft.

The mechanism of a kézifék usually involves a lever, button, or pedal that the driver actuates. When engaged, this control system transmits force through cables or rods to brake shoes or pads that press against the brake drums or discs of the rear wheels. This friction holds the vehicle in place. Modern vehicles are increasingly incorporating electronic parking brakes, often referred to as EPB, which perform the same function but are activated by an electronic switch rather than a mechanical lever.

The kézifék is a crucial safety feature. It is used when parking on inclines, whether uphill or downhill, and is also often used as a secondary braking system in case of primary brake failure.
