Käyttötiloja

Käyttötiloja is a Finnish term meaning "usage spaces" or "places available for use". The word is commonly used in the context of public facilities, educational institutions, offices and community centers to describe areas that can be rented or scheduled for various purposes. It comprises several types of spaces, such as meeting rooms, conference halls, workshops, rehearsal rooms, laboratories or shared office areas. In many municipalities the term is used in pronouncements about the management and allocation of these spaces and in informational brochures on municipal services.

The concept of käyttötiloja is rooted in the idea of flexible usage of public assets. In schools and universities the spaces are usually divided into classrooms, laboratory rooms and seminar rooms, which can be booked by staff and students for lectures or research projects. In libraries and cultural centers, rooms for reading, exhibitions, music rehearsals or community events are offered as käyttötiloja to citizens. In corporate contexts, the term denotes hot‑desking premises, shared meeting rooms or data‑processing rooms that satisfy the needs of staff or be made available to other companies.

Municipalities in Finland often advertise employment and educational opportunities in usage spaces: applicants must specify the type of dienstplan they prefer, i.e. whether they look for a dedicated office/meeting room or a temporary “‑tilo”, and the facility’s location. Some city administrations use a scheduling system called “tilojen hallinta” that integrates with regional calendars.

Applications, regulations and booking procedures are usually found on the municipality’s website, alongside a list of available rooms, descriptions and pricing. Frequently updated policies ensure that the spaces are used efficiently, preventing waste and encouraging innovation.
