Käyttökertomukset, often translated as user stories, are short, simple descriptions of a feature told from the perspective of the person who desires the new capability, usually a user or customer of the system. They are a fundamental component of agile software development methodologies, particularly Scrum. A typical user story follows a simple template: "As a [type of user], I want [some goal] so that [some reason]." This structure helps development teams understand the "who," "what," and "why" behind a feature request.

User stories are intentionally kept brief and informal to foster communication and collaboration between business stakeholders and the development team. They are not exhaustive specifications but rather placeholders for conversations. The details are fleshed out through ongoing discussions and refinement sessions. The "so that" clause is crucial as it articulates the business value or benefit the user expects to gain, which helps in prioritizing development efforts.

The primary purpose of user stories is to define requirements in a way that is easily understandable and manageable for agile teams. They facilitate iterative development by breaking down large projects into smaller, deliverable increments. Each user story represents a valuable piece of functionality that can be developed, tested, and potentially delivered to users in a short timeframe.
