Kylmätyöstettyjä refers to metal that has undergone cold working processes. These are manufacturing techniques where metal is shaped at or near room temperature. Common cold working methods include drawing, rolling, stamping, and forging. These processes deform the metal without heating it significantly, relying instead on mechanical forces.

The primary effect of cold working is to increase the material's strength and hardness through strain hardening, also known as work hardening. This occurs because the plastic deformation introduces dislocations within the metal's crystal structure, which impede further movement and thus increase resistance to deformation. While this enhances mechanical properties, it can also reduce the metal's ductility, making it more brittle.

Cold working offers several advantages over hot working. It typically results in a superior surface finish and tighter dimensional tolerances. Since no heating is involved, there is less risk of oxidation or scaling, and the energy consumption can be lower. However, cold working requires greater forces to achieve deformation compared to hot working, and it is generally not suitable for significantly altering the shape of large or very hard metal pieces. The process is widely used in the production of wires, sheets, fasteners, and various small, precise components.
