Kvanttekniker

Kvanttekniker, or quantum technician, is a professional who specializes in the development, installation, operation, and maintenance of quantum technologies. They commonly work with devices used for quantum information processing and quantum sensing, such as superconducting qubits, trapped-ion systems, and photonic quantum circuits. Kvantteknikere are employed in universities, national laboratories, quantum startups, and industrial R&D labs.

Typical duties include assembling and integrating quantum hardware, maintaining cryogenic, vacuum, and optical subsystems, and calibrating control electronics. They operate and troubleshoot cryogenic cooling systems (for example dilution refrigerators), alignment of laser and optical components, and microwave or RF control lines. They collect data, monitor system performance, document procedures, and help with experiments or production-scale fabrication. They also support safety, quality assurance, and equipment upgrades, and may install software for instrument control and data analysis.

Education and skills: Many kvantteknikere have a technical or engineering background, such as a bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical or mechanical engineering, or a specialized program in quantum technology. Relevant skills include cryogenics, vacuum technology, optics and photonics, electronics and microwave engineering, programming for data acquisition, and strong problem-solving and teamwork abilities. Troubleshooting, precise instrumentation, and adherence to safety standards are important.

Working conditions and outlook: The field is expanding as quantum technologies move from laboratories to early-stage products. Kvantteknikere may work in cleanrooms, high-vacuum environments, or lab benches, sometimes with irregular hours aligned to experiments. The role often leads to more advanced engineering or research positions, with opportunities in hardware development, system integration, and QA.
