Kuumapaineistus, also known as hot pressing, is a manufacturing process used to consolidate powdered materials into solid, dense objects. It involves heating the powder to a temperature below its melting point and simultaneously applying pressure. This combination of heat and pressure facilitates diffusion and particle rearrangement, leading to the formation of strong bonds between the powder particles and the reduction of porosity.

The specific temperature and pressure applied during hot pressing depend on the material being processed. Refractory metals, ceramics, and some polymers are commonly processed using this method. The process can be carried out in a vacuum to prevent oxidation and contamination of the material, or in a controlled atmosphere. The resulting products often exhibit enhanced mechanical properties such as increased hardness, strength, and wear resistance compared to materials produced by other consolidation techniques.

Hot pressing is frequently used in the production of cutting tools, bearings, high-performance structural components, and specialized electronic materials. The precision and control offered by the hot pressing process allow for the creation of complex shapes with tight dimensional tolerances. It is particularly effective for materials that are difficult to sinter or melt without significant degradation.
