The fundamental principle behind heat treatment is the manipulation of material phases and their atomic arrangements through temperature. By heating a material to a specific temperature, its crystalline structure can change, allowing for rearrangement of atoms. Subsequent cooling at a controlled rate dictates the final microstructure and, consequently, the material's properties. Hardening processes, such as quenching and tempering, are used to increase strength and hardness. Normalizing refines the grain structure and improves uniformity. Stress relieving involves heating to a lower temperature to reduce internal stresses without significantly altering hardness.
