Kuulolaite

Kuulolaite, the Finnish term for a hearing aid, is a medical device designed to assist people with hearing loss by picking up ambient sound, amplifying it, and delivering it to the ear. Most units include a microphone, a signal processor or amplifier, and a receiver or speaker, powered by a battery or rechargeable cell. Many contemporary models also feature wireless connectivity and feedback suppression.

There are several styles of kuulolaite, including behind-the-ear (BTE), in-the-ear (ITE), in-the-canal (ITC), completely-in-canal (CIC), and receiver-in-canal (RIC). Digital models offer advanced processing and customization. Some devices are custom-molded to fit the ear and include removable earmolds or domes for comfort and fit.

Operation typically involves sound being captured by the microphone, converted to electrical signals, processed to emphasize speech and reduce background noise, then amplified and delivered to the inner ear via a receiver or earmold. Modern devices may offer multiple programs for different listening situations, wind noise control, noise reduction, feedback management, and, in many cases, Bluetooth or smartphone integration for streaming audio and remote control.

Regulation and access: kuulolaite is a regulated medical device in many jurisdictions. In the European Union it carries CE marking; in many countries it is prescribed and fitted by audiologists or hearing specialists. Costs and reimbursement vary by country and health system, with some coverage available through public programs or private insurance.

Maintenance and limitations: Regular cleaning, drying, and occasional professional fitting are recommended. Batteries or rechargeable cells must be replenished. Hearing aids do not restore normal hearing, and some types of hearing loss may require additional treatments such as cochlear implants. Proper fitting and ongoing care can improve speech understanding and daily communication.
