Kurkunärvisõngu refers to a condition involving the recurrent laryngeal nerve, a crucial nerve that controls the vocal cords. This condition can manifest in several ways, most commonly as nerve compression or irritation. The recurrent laryngeal nerve originates in the neck, travels down into the chest, and then loops back up to the larynx (voice box). Its long and complex path makes it susceptible to injury or compression from various structures in the neck and chest.

Symptoms of kurkunärvisõngu can vary depending on the severity and location of the nerve involvement. The most prominent symptom is hoarseness or a change in voice quality. This can range from a slight raspiness to a complete loss of voice. Other potential symptoms include difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), a sensation of a lump in the throat (globus sensation), and, in some cases, shortness of breath (dyspnea). These symptoms often arise due to impaired vocal cord function, affecting both voice production and airway protection.

The causes of kurkunärvisõngu are diverse and can include surgical trauma, particularly during thyroid or neck surgery where the nerve is in close proximity to the surgical field. Benign or malignant tumors in the neck or chest can also compress the nerve. In some instances, inflammation or infection can affect the nerve. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and may include laryngoscopy to visualize vocal cord movement and imaging studies to identify any underlying causes.
