Kurihama

Kurihama (久里浜) is a coastal district of Yokosuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It sits on the northern coast of the Miura Peninsula along Tokyo Bay and includes residential areas, a fishing port, and waterfront parks.

Historically, Kurihama is known as the landing site of Commodore Matthew C. Perry’s expedition in the 1850s, which helped lead to Japan’s opening to formal diplomatic relations with the United States. A monument and public spaces at or near the landing site commemorate this event and mark Kurihama as a point of reference in discussions of Japan’s modernization and foreign relations.

Today the area combines maritime activity with tourism and local commerce. Kurihama Port remains a center for small-scale fishing and local livelihoods, while parks and promenades along the waterfront provide recreational space for residents and visitors. Notable recreation sites include Kurihama Flower Park, a botanical destination that draws visitors seasonally for its flower displays.

Transportation in Kurihama is anchored by Kurihama Station on the Keikyu Kurihama Line, which connects the district with Yokohama and other parts of the rail network. Local bus services and road connections link Kurihama to surrounding Yokosuka neighborhoods and to central Kanagawa.

Educational facilities serve the local population with primary and secondary schools located within or nearby the district. As a coastal community with historical significance and ongoing port activity, Kurihama maintains a mix of residential living, maritime economy, and cultural memory.
